Former Pirates Defender Returns to Bafana Bafana Squad After Injury Setback

Mbekezeli Mbokazi Returns From Injury as Bafana Bafana Receive Defensive Boost

Bafana Bafana have received a welcome boost ahead of their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying assignments against Kenya, with former Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi returning to the national team setup following an injury setback.

The young defender's inclusion in the preliminary squad provides head coach Hugo Broos with another defensive option as South Africa continue preparing for their upcoming international commitments. His return also offers Mbokazi an opportunity to demonstrate his fitness and remind the technical team of the qualities that previously attracted attention in South African football.

Mbokazi rose to prominence through his performances for Orlando Pirates, where his development and defensive abilities earned him recognition as one of the country's promising young talents. His progress at the Soweto giants helped strengthen his reputation and opened the door to opportunities with the national team.

However, his injury interrupted that progress, forcing him to focus on recovery and regaining his fitness. Returning to the preliminary squad represents an important step in his efforts to re-establish himself in Bafana Bafana's plans.

Although his inclusion is encouraging, Mbokazi has not yet secured a place in the final squad. He will need to demonstrate that he has recovered sufficiently and can compete at the required level before the coaching staff makes its final selection.

South Africa's defensive organisation will be particularly important against Kenya, with the technical team expected to assess players who can remain composed under pressure, communicate effectively and maintain consistency throughout the qualifiers.

Mbokazi's availability gives Broos another option to consider as he evaluates the players capable of strengthening the national team's defensive department.

For the young defender, the immediate priority will be regaining his rhythm, maintaining his fitness and making the most of the opportunity presented by his return.

Bafana Bafana supporters will now wait to see whether Mbokazi earns a place in the final squad and gets an opportunity to represent South Africa against Kenya. His return is a positive development, but his performances and physical condition will ultimately determine whether he features in the upcoming matches.
