South African football is preparing for a special occasion as Arsenal legend and former France international Thierry Henry is set to attend the much-anticipated Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
The announcement was confirmed by Betway, the Premier Soccer League’s title sponsor, which is bringing its global brand ambassador to South Africa for one of the country’s biggest sporting events.
Henry’s arrival adds international star power to a fixture already famous for its passionate supporters, fierce rivalry and electric atmosphere. The meeting between Pirates and Chiefs is one of the most anticipated matches on the South African football calendar, with both sets of supporters eager to see their teams claim bragging rights.
For many fans, the Soweto Derby represents much more than three league points. It is a contest shaped by history, pride, loyalty and the deep emotional connection supporters have with their clubs.
Henry Excited To Experience The Soweto Derby
The former Arsenal forward has experienced some of football’s biggest occasions across Europe and internationally. However, he is now preparing to witness the unique atmosphere surrounding South Africa’s most celebrated domestic rivalry.
“I’ve experienced some incredible football rivalries around the world, and I know how much the Soweto Derby means to supporters in South Africa,” Henry said.
“I’m excited to experience that atmosphere at FNB Stadium and to meet some of the fans who make the occasion what it is.”
His comments reflect the growing recognition of the Soweto Derby beyond South African borders. The match regularly attracts attention because of the intensity of the rivalry and the colourful support that fills the stadium.
Henry will also meet and present a prize to the winner of Betway’s S’bonise & Win campaign, an initiative celebrating supporters who display their loyalty through their teams’ colours and football regalia. Eligible Betway account holders have the opportunity to win up to R30,000 in cash.
Why Thierry Henry Is A Football Icon
Henry is widely regarded as one of the outstanding forwards of his generation. He became a global star during his time at Arsenal, where he scored 228 goals and established himself as the club’s record goalscorer.
He was a central figure in Arsenal’s famous 2003/04 Premier League campaign, when the team completed the season unbeaten. His achievements also included multiple Premier League Golden Boots.
At international level, Henry won the 1998 FIFA World Cup and Euro 2000 with France. He later enjoyed success with Barcelona, including winning the UEFA Champions League as part of a decorated career.
