Abdeslam Ouaddou Sends Shockwaves Across Africa After Dramatic Triumph

Ouaddou Makes Bold Pirates Claim After African Stars Victory

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou believes his team have taken a major step towards qualifying for the CAF Champions League group stages after securing a crucial 1-0 victory over African Stars in the first leg of their second preliminary round encounter.

The Buccaneers defeated the Namibian champions at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone on Saturday, 17 October 2026, putting themselves in a strong position ahead of the decisive return fixture in Soweto.

South African international Tshepang Moremi proved to be the difference between the two sides, scoring the winning goal in the 75th minute after Pirates had struggled to break down a determined African Stars defence.

Speaking after the match, Ouaddou expressed satisfaction with his players' performance, praising their discipline, tactical awareness and ability to adapt to challenging conditions. The Moroccan tactician also credited the club's analysis department for preparing the team effectively for the continental assignment.

Although Pirates created several opportunities, they were unable to find the breakthrough during the first half. However, they maintained their composure after the interval, with Moremi eventually rewarding their persistence.

Ouaddou was particularly pleased with his team's defensive organisation and clean sheet, emphasising the importance of limiting their opponents' opportunities in a competition where every goal can prove decisive.

The victory is a significant boost for Pirates, who are determined to avoid another disappointing early elimination after falling to DR Congo's Saint-Éloi Lupopo at the same preliminary stage last season.

With a one-goal advantage, the Soweto giants will now prepare to complete the job in front of their home supporters. However, Ouaddou will be aware that African Stars could still pose a serious threat in the return leg.

Pirates must remain focused, maintain their defensive discipline and capitalise on scoring opportunities if they are to secure qualification.

For the Buccaneers, the objective is clear: reach the group stages, restore their continental momentum and establish themselves among Africa's leading clubs once again.
