Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz believes young attacker Wandile Duba has the potential to develop into a player capable of representing South Africa at senior international level.

Duba has continued to attract attention with his performances for Amakhosi, and Da Cruz is encouraged by the youngster’s progress. However, the coach has stressed that greater consistency will be crucial if the promising forward is to reach his full potential.

“I am very happy for Duba; he is a young player, and so sometimes he has a lot of ups and downs. He must improve his consistency,” Da Cruz noted.

The French tactician believes Duba possesses the qualities required to make the step up, but acknowledges that playing regularly at a high level remains an important part of his development.

With Bafana Bafana continually looking to build a strong pool of young talent, Duba’s emergence could give coach Hugo Broos another attacking option in the future.

For now, the focus remains on helping the 21-year-old establish himself at club level. Da Cruz’s comments underline the belief within the Chiefs camp that Duba has the ability to go beyond domestic football and eventually earn international recognition.

If he can turn his promising displays into consistent performances, the Chiefs youngster could put himself firmly in contention for a place in the Bafana Bafana setup.
