De Sa Says Showboating Should Be Allowed in Saturday’s Soweto Derby

Former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows coach Roger De Sa believes players should be allowed to showcase their skills during Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby, provided their team is winning convincingly. His comments have reignited the debate about showboating and individual expression ahead of the blockbuster encounter between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

De Sa, who has considerable experience in South African football, believes there is nothing wrong with players entertaining supporters through tricks, dribbling and other displays of skill when their team has established a comfortable lead. However, his remarks suggest that the scoreline should influence when footballers choose to express themselves in this manner.

Reflecting on his experience of the famous derby, De Sa highlighted the significance of the occasion, recalling his involvement in a match between Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates.

“I played a Soweto Derby myself. A Swallows v Pirates match was massive in my time. You only do showboating if you are winning, and you are winning convincingly,” De Sa said.

His comments come as supporters prepare for another intense meeting between the two Soweto giants, a fixture that consistently attracts significant attention across South Africa.

Showboating has always been part of football, allowing talented players to demonstrate their creativity while entertaining spectators. Skills and tricks can change the atmosphere of a match, particularly when a player manages to beat an opponent with exceptional technique.

However, such displays can also provoke controversy, especially during closely contested encounters. Opponents may interpret showboating as disrespectful, potentially increasing tensions on the pitch.

The Soweto Derby presents a particularly sensitive environment because of the historic rivalry between Pirates and Chiefs. Both teams will be determined to secure victory and earn bragging rights over their fierce rivals.

De Sa’s position suggests that players should consider the match situation before attempting elaborate tricks. While individual brilliance can excite supporters, maintaining discipline and respecting opponents remain important.

Ultimately, his remarks add another talking point to Saturday’s encounter, with supporters eager to see whether the players will prioritise flair, tactical discipline or a combination of both.
