Warren Gatland Backs Springboks as 2027 Rugby World Cup Favourites, But Raises Injury Concerns

Warren Gatland believes South Africa’s Springboks will enter the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia as favourites, but he has warned that injuries to key players could significantly affect their chances of winning another title.

The former Wales and British and Irish Lions coach has praised the Springboks for their impressive performances and consistency under head coach Rassie Erasmus. South Africa have established themselves as one of the strongest teams in international rugby after winning the 2019 and 2023 Rugby World Cups.

Gatland believes the reigning champions possess the quality, experience and physical strength required to compete for another trophy. However, he stressed that maintaining the fitness of their most important players will be crucial to their ambitions.

“I think they (South Africa) will be favourites (for the 2027 World Cup). It depends on whether you lose one or two key players picking up injuries. I think a lot of those teams in the next twelve months will be working exceptionally hard to bridge that gap with South Africa.”

The Springboks have developed a reputation for their powerful forwards, effective set pieces and ability to perform under pressure. Their attacking options and physical approach have also made them difficult opponents for other leading rugby nations.

Gatland believes South Africa have very few weaknesses, making them a serious threat to any team they encounter during the tournament.

“South Africa don’t have a lot of weaknesses. Great set piece, they’ve got some real attacking flair, some pace, and obviously big and physical. If you’re going to beat South Africa, it’s probably going to be in an arm wrestle and it’s going to be a tight game.”

Despite his confidence in the Springboks, Gatland believes several countries could challenge their dominance in 2027. New Zealand, England, France and Argentina remain potential contenders, while Australia could also improve significantly before the tournament begins.

He also highlighted the importance of squad depth, particularly for teams hoping to progress through the demanding knockout stages.

Meanwhile, speculation continues about a possible quarter-final meeting between South Africa and New Zealand. Gatland noted that teams must accept the tournament draw and concentrate on performing well rather than worrying about potential opponents.

Beyond the World Cup, Gatland also considers South Africa strong contenders for the Nations Championship title, although New Zealand could challenge them.

Ultimately, the Springboks will need to maintain their standards, manage injuries carefully and prepare thoroughly if they hope to become the first team to win three consecutive Rugby World Cup titles.
