Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios has welcomed the appointment of South African football legend Doctor “16V” Khumalo to the South African Football Association (SAFA) technical committee.
Palacios, who previously coached Khumalo at both Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs, has expressed confidence in the former midfielder’s ability to contribute his knowledge and experience to the development of South African football.
Khumalo’s appointment has attracted attention because of his outstanding contribution to the game, both at club and international level. He remains one of the country’s most respected football personalities, having earned recognition for his creativity, technical ability and performances during his playing career.
The former midfielder enjoyed a particularly successful relationship with Kaizer Chiefs, where he became a fan favourite. He also played an important role in the national team during a memorable period in South African football history.
One of the highlights of Khumalo’s career was South Africa’s triumph at the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, when Bafana Bafana lifted the continental trophy on home soil. The achievement remains one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s football history.
With his extensive experience, Khumalo could bring valuable insight to SAFA’s technical committee, which contributes to discussions surrounding coaching, player development and the overall technical direction of football in the country.
Palacios’ endorsement carries particular significance because he worked closely with Khumalo during his coaching career. Having seen the former midfielder’s abilities first-hand at both club and international level, Palacios is well placed to appreciate the football knowledge he could bring to the committee.
The appointment also highlights the potential benefits of involving former players who understand the demands of professional football in decisions about the sport’s future.
South African football continues to face challenges involving youth development, coaching standards and the creation of opportunities for emerging talent. Strengthening these areas remains important if the country hopes to produce more players capable of competing at the highest level.
SAFA’s technical committee therefore has an important responsibility in helping shape the direction of the game. Khumalo’s contribution will be judged by the ideas, recommendations and initiatives he helps bring forward in his new role.
With Palacios publicly backing his appointment, attention will now turn to how the former Bafana Bafana star uses his experience to contribute to the continued development of South African football.
