Mbekezeli Mbokazi's remarkable rise in football has reached another milestone after the South African defender was ranked among Major League Soccer's top five young talents, further highlighting his growing reputation in the United States.

The Chicago Fire centre-back was ranked fourth in the league's prestigious 2026 22 Under 22 list, which recognises the best young players competing in MLS. The recognition is another reward for a defender whose career has continued to soar since joining the American outfit from Orlando Pirates.

Mbokazi's transition to football in the United States has been impressive. Despite his relatively young age, the defender has shown maturity, composure and consistency, establishing himself as an important figure in Chicago's defensive structure.

His performances have demonstrated why the club moved to secure his services, with his physical strength, reading of the game and ability to remain calm under pressure making him a valuable asset. Rather than being overwhelmed by the challenge of playing abroad, Mbokazi has continued to improve and earn recognition.

His international performances have also played a major role in raising his profile. At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the defender emerged as one of Bafana Bafana's standout performers, producing a series of assured displays against some of the world's leading players.

Mbokazi was instrumental in South Africa's historic progression to the Round of 32, delivering four consecutive impressive performances during the tournament. His defensive discipline, confidence on the ball and willingness to put his body on the line attracted attention beyond South African football.

One of his standout moments came against Canada, when an important clearance helped keep Bafana Bafana in the contest before they eventually suffered a narrow defeat.

The youngster has carried that confidence back to Chicago, continuing to build on the experience gained on football's biggest international stage.

His latest MLS recognition reflects more than potential; it rewards the consistent performances that have accompanied his rapid development.

For Mbokazi, the journey is far from complete. Having conquered challenges at Orlando Pirates, made his mark at the World Cup and established himself in MLS, the defender continues to prove that his rise is no coincidence. If he maintains his current trajectory, even greater opportunities could await the talented South African.
