Ouaddou Reveals How He Plans to Turn Pirates Youngsters Into Future Stars
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained his approach to developing emerging talents Mpho Padime and Simphiwe Masilela, stressing that identifying promising young players is only the beginning of the process.
The Buccaneers mentor believes that young footballers need proper guidance, clear objectives and the freedom to express themselves on the pitch as they continue adapting to the demands of senior football.
Ouaddou's comments come after the two youngsters impressed during Orlando Pirates' convincing 4-0 victory over African Stars in the second leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie. The result secured a 5-0 aggregate triumph and confirmed the Soweto giants' qualification for the group stages of the competition.
Padime made a particularly memorable contribution by scoring Pirates' third goal, while Masilela provided an assist as both players demonstrated their attacking qualities.
Speaking about their development, Ouaddou explained that his responsibility extends beyond recognising their natural abilities. He wants to ensure they understand their roles and have specific targets to achieve whenever they receive opportunities to play.
"Padime and Masilela, it's young players, and when you detect such talent on them, you just have to manage the talent and to give them targets when they go to play the game," Ouaddou said.
The coach revealed that he deliberately gives the youngsters a manageable number of objectives rather than overwhelming them with too many instructions. His approach is designed to help them remain focused on the most important aspects of their performances.
According to the Pirates mentor, those targets include making effective decisions in possession, attacking the opposition with purpose and getting into dangerous positions in the final third.
Ouaddou also believes that young players should be allowed to enjoy football and express their creativity when the circumstances permit it. However, he expects discipline, efficiency and tactical responsibility when the match remains closely contested.
The Moroccan coach's philosophy reflects the importance of balancing individual expression with the collective demands of a team competing at the highest level.
For Padime and Masilela, the opportunity to learn under a coach who is willing to invest in their development could prove significant as they seek to establish themselves in the Pirates first team.
The Buccaneers have built a reputation for promoting promising youngsters, with previous graduates demonstrating that the pathway from development football to the senior squad can lead to major opportunities.
Nevertheless, Ouaddou's message is clear: talent alone will not guarantee success. Consistent hard work, tactical understanding and the ability to execute instructions will determine how far the two youngsters progress.
With Pirates preparing for the challenges of domestic and continental football, the development of Padime and Masilela could become an important part of the club's ambitions this season.
