South African rugby has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Lions lock Hyron Andrews who was found dead at the team hotel in France on Friday morning, shortly before the Johannesburg-based side’s historic Investec Champions Cup debut against La Rochelle.
French authorities have launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death, with an autopsy ordered to determine the exact cause. Initial reports indicated a possible accidental death, with no evidence of foul play reported.
SA Rugby confirmed that Andrews died following an accident involving a fall at the team hotel.
The tragedy has cast a dark shadow over the Lions’ European campaign with the club confirming that Saturday evening Champions Cup fixture against La Rochelle would proceed following discussions with the players. The match will be played in honour of their fallen teammate.
A moment of silence will also be observed before Champions Cup and Challenge Cup fixtures this weekend as the rugby community pays tribute to Andrews.
Lions chief executive Rudolf Straeuli expressed his devastation describing Andrews as a talented player and a valued member of the Lions family who had joined the Johannesburg-based franchise earlier this season.
Andrews began his professional career with the Sharks before moving to England to represent Sale Sharks. He subsequently returned to South Africa to join the Lions and had already featured in three United Rugby Championship matches this season.
The former Junior Springbok leaves behind his wife, Maiglin, and their two young sons, Hendrix and Emerson.
His death represents a heartbreaking loss for his family, teammates and supporters who followed his rugby journey.
The Lions, SA Rugby and the wider rugby fraternity have extended their deepest condolences to his loved ones as investigations continue into the circumstances of the tragedy.
