Rulani Mokwena continued his impressive run at Pyramids FC after guiding the Egyptian side to a 4-1 victory over El-Gaish in the Egyptian Premier League.
The result extended Pyramids’ winning streak to 11 matches in all competitions and gave them their seventh consecutive league victory. The team returned to domestic action after securing an away win against South Sudanese side El Merriekh in the CAF Champions League.
Pyramids started the match strongly and took the lead in the sixth minute through Mohanad Lasheen. The midfielder scored his second goal of the season, taking his total goal contributions to four.
Mokwena’s team continued to apply pressure and doubled their advantage in the 15th minute when Mostafa Ziko scored to make it 2-0. However, El-Gaish responded in the 35th minute through Ahmed Tarek, who reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Pyramids continued creating chances as they looked to restore their two-goal lead. Youssef Obama appeared to have scored, but his effort was ruled out following a lengthy VAR review.
The Egyptian side eventually extended their advantage with 10 minutes remaining in normal time when Mahmoud Saber scored his second goal in four days. Mahmoud Zalaka then converted a penalty in the 89th minute to complete the 4-1 victory.
The result leaves Pyramids at the top of the Egyptian Premier League standings with a five-point advantage over second-placed Al Ahly, who have a game in hand. Mokwena’s team will now turn their attention to the second leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round tie against El Merriekh on Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, Mokwena has reportedly attracted interest from Spain, with La Liga side Valencia CF linked with a possible move for the South African coach.
La Liga side Valencia CF have reportedly shown interest in former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena, offering him an assistant coach position with a monthly salary of R7 million.
Mokwena has reportedly agreed to personal terms with the Spanish club, with discussions continuing over the final paperwork. If the deal goes through, his proposed R7 million monthly salary would make him the highest-paid South African coach. However, the agreement and reported financial details have yet to be officially confirmed by either party.
Mokwena previously coached Mamelodi Sundowns before taking charge of Pyramids FC in Egypt. His current winning run has strengthened his reputation, although it remains unclear whether the reported Valencia opportunity will develop into an official appointment.
For now, the coach remains focused on his responsibilities at Pyramids, where he will be hoping to maintain the team's excellent form and guide them further in the CAF Champions League.
