Kaizer Chiefs Urged to Abandon Short-Term Fixes and Build a Long-Term Football Project

Amakhosi need a clear football identity, consistent recruitment and a sustainable player-development strategy to restore stability and build a team capable of competing for major honours season after season.

Kaizer Chiefs have been urged to look beyond short-term solutions and establish a long-term football project that can provide stability, consistency and a clear direction for the club's future.

The Soweto giants remain one of South Africa's most prominent football institutions, with supporters expecting the team to challenge for trophies and restore its reputation as a dominant force in domestic football. However, building a competitive side requires more than appointing a new coach or bringing in fresh players during every transfer window.

A growing concern among sections of the Amakhosi faithful is whether the club has a clearly defined football philosophy that remains in place regardless of who occupies the coaching position.

Every new coach arrives with personal tactical preferences, different expectations and a particular vision of how the team should operate. Players must often adapt to new formations, unfamiliar roles and different demands on and off the ball.

While some footballers thrive under a new system, others may struggle to adjust or find themselves on the fringes of the squad despite previously being important members of the team.

When another coaching change follows, the process can begin again. Recruitment priorities may shift, existing players may become surplus to requirements, and promising young talents could find it difficult to establish themselves in the senior team.

This cycle raises an important question: how can Kaizer Chiefs build a team for the future if the club's footballing direction changes whenever a new coach arrives?

Coaching appointments are an important part of football management, but frequent tactical and structural changes can make it difficult to establish continuity and measure long-term progress.

The responsibility for building a sustainable football project should not rest exclusively on the head coach. The club's board and football management must play a central role in defining the direction Amakhosi want to take.

That process should begin with establishing a recognisable playing philosophy, identifying the qualities required in each position and ensuring that recruitment decisions support the club's broader objectives.

Whether the preferred approach involves high pressing, possession-based football, quick transitions or a combination of different styles, the club needs a coherent framework that guides its decisions.

Once that identity is established, Kaizer Chiefs can recruit a coach whose methods align with the project rather than allowing every new appointment to trigger a complete restructuring.

Such a model would also help the club make more informed transfer decisions, reduce unnecessary squad turnover and create a clearer pathway for young players progressing through the development system.

A sustainable football philosophy should connect the academy, recruitment department and first team.

Young players need a realistic opportunity to progress into senior football, while coaches should be able to identify emerging talents whose attributes match the club's preferred style of play.

Instead of repeatedly spending money to replace players who do not suit a new tactical system, Chiefs could benefit from a recruitment strategy that prioritises long-term squad planning, positional needs and player development.

This would not eliminate the need for experienced signings or changes in personnel. Rather, it would ensure that individual decisions contribute to a broader plan instead of becoming isolated responses to immediate problems.

Building a successful football project takes time, and supporters may need to accept that sustainable progress does not always produce instant results.

However, patience should not become an excuse for poor performances, weak recruitment or a lack of measurable improvement. The club would need clear targets, regular assessments and accountability at every level of its football operations.

A long-term strategy must remain flexible enough to accommodate tactical adjustments, injuries, changing opposition and the demands of competing for trophies. Consistency in philosophy does not mean refusing to adapt; it means making changes without losing sight of the overall objective.

For a club of Kaizer Chiefs' stature, the challenge is to combine immediate competitiveness with a structure capable of delivering success over several seasons.

Ultimately, Kaizer Chiefs need more than another promising appointment or a transfer window that generates excitement. They need a football project built on a clear identity, intelligent recruitment, effective development and continuity in leadership.

The coach should be an important part of that vision, but the vision itself must belong to the club.

If Amakhosi can establish a consistent footballing direction and support it with the right personnel, they could create a stronger foundation for sustained success rather than repeatedly rebuilding from the beginning.
