Former Rangers player Richard Foster has questioned the reported interest from European clubs in South African defender Olwethu Makhanya, arguing that the young centre-back still needs to prove his ability against top-quality opposition before his potential can be properly assessed.
Makhanya has attracted attention following his performances, with speculation continuing to grow about a possible move to European football. However, Foster believes it may be too early to judge whether the defender is ready to compete at a higher level.
Speaking about the reported transfer links, Foster questioned whether Makhanya had faced enough challenging opponents to demonstrate how he would perform under intense pressure.
According to Rangersnews, the former Rangers star said: "He's not really faced a top opponent. He's not really faced adversity. Sometimes you can tell a lot about a player by how they respond to, 'Oh, this guy's as quick as me. This guy's as strong as me.'"
Foster's comments suggest that the defender's ability to handle physically demanding battles and deal with technically gifted attackers will be crucial in determining whether he can succeed at a higher level.
For centre-backs, facing opponents with similar speed, strength and technical ability provides an important test of their defensive positioning, decision-making and composure under pressure.
Although Makhanya has shown promising qualities, Foster believes his performances must be judged against the standard of opposition he faces before conclusions can be drawn about his readiness for European football.
The former Rangers player also questioned whether the reported interest could be an attempt to generate publicity around the defender rather than evidence of serious transfer negotiations.
To support his argument, Foster referred to former Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, who was repeatedly linked with moves to several clubs during his time in Scotland.
Foster explained: "I don't know whether they're just trying to spark interest in him early. I mean, how many teams wanted to sign Morelos? Of course. Did he ever go? There must have been about thirty different teams that came in for Morelos."
His comparison highlights how footballers can be linked with numerous clubs without those reports necessarily leading to a transfer.
In modern football, transfer speculation does not always reflect concrete negotiations, and reported interest should not automatically be interpreted as confirmation that a deal is close.
Nevertheless, Foster's remarks do not prove that the reported interest in Makhanya is false. Instead, they raise questions about how seriously the links should be taken and whether the defender has demonstrated enough to justify the growing attention.
For Makhanya, the focus will remain on improving his game, maintaining consistent performances and demonstrating his ability against stronger opposition.
Delivering impressive displays in demanding matches could help strengthen his reputation and increase the likelihood of attracting genuine interest from clubs competing at a higher level.
For now, uncertainty remains over whether the reported European interest will develop into a concrete transfer opportunity. Makhanya's performances in the coming months could play an important role in shaping the next stage of his career.
