Pirates legend blasts club over lack of respect

Orlando Pirates legend Jerry Sikhosana has criticised his former club over what he describes as a lack of recognition, claiming that Kaizer Chiefs showed him more respect than the Buccaneers despite his contribution to one of the biggest moments in the club’s history.

Sikhosana remains an important figure in Pirates history after scoring the decisive goal against ASEC Mimosas in the 1995 CAF Champions League final. His strike helped the Soweto giants secure their only title in the competition, earning him a special place among the club’s supporters.

However, the former striker says his relationship with Pirates has become disappointing since his playing days ended. Speaking on the Kasi Jam podcast, he revealed that he has sometimes had to queue with ordinary supporters to buy tickets when attending matches involving his former team.

“When you look at the Pirates jersey with a star, the first impression should be, ‘Thank you Jerry Sikhosana, you gave us a star’,” he said.

Sikhosana also recalled an incident in Durban when he noticed former Pirates players Edward Motale and Lucky Lekgwathi wearing official club tracksuits. He felt overlooked during the occasion and questioned why he had not received similar consideration.

The situation became even more frustrating when he struggled to obtain a ticket. According to Sikhosana, assistance eventually came from Kaizer Chiefs marketing and commercial director Jessica Motaung, despite the fierce rivalry between the two clubs.

“All I wanted there was to ask for a ticket as a Pirates legend, but I was deprived. Chiefs gave me \[a ticket\],” he explained.

He expressed disappointment that a rival club had offered him the attention he expected from the team he had represented with distinction.

“I got special treatment from a rival, which is the same team I used to destroy. Where are the people I served during the derby?” he asked.

Sikhosana’s comments have reignited discussion about how football clubs recognise former players and preserve relationships with their legends. While his achievements remain part of Pirates’ history, his account highlights his personal frustration over the treatment he believes he has received.

The former Bafana Bafana striker is still involved in football as the owner of Tembisa Hollywood Thunder, who compete in the ABC Motsepe League.
