AmaZulu head coach Arthur Zwane has explained why leaving the Durban-based club would be a difficult decision, despite reports linking him to a possible role within the South African Football Association (SAFA) and the Bafana Bafana setup.
Zwane joined Usuthu in October 2024 alongside former development coach Vusumuzi Vilakazi after spending 24 years at Kaizer Chiefs. Since his arrival, he has helped AmaZulu make progress, guiding the team to a top-four finish in the Betway Premiership last season.
The club has also made an encouraging start to the current campaign. AmaZulu were sitting third on the league table with 19 points from eight matches, four points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, according to the figures provided. Their performances have strengthened expectations that the team could compete for another strong finish.
However, speculation about Zwane’s future has emerged amid reports that newly appointed Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane wants him as part of his technical team. Zwane addressed his commitment to AmaZulu while speaking to the media on the sidelines of the draw for the last 16 of the 2026 Carling Knockout Cup.
The coach explained that his decision to leave Kaizer Chiefs was significant because he had spent most of his professional career at the Soweto club and considered it home. When AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu approached him, Zwane said he made it clear that he would only accept the opportunity after receiving the approval of Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung.
“I’ve said it more than once that AmaZulu, when they recruited me, they took me away from the team that I was with for 24 years,” Zwane said.
He added that Zungu’s vision for the club convinced him that he could contribute to the project. Zwane believed the role matched the type of challenge he wanted, particularly with Vilakazi involved at the time.
Although AmaZulu endured a slow start after the coaching changes, Zwane said the team gradually grew in confidence and stature. He credited the freedom given to the technical team to develop the players and understand the club’s environment.
The coach also praised the support he has received from the club’s supporters, management, board and chief executive officer, describing it as exceptional.
“With the support that we are getting from our supporters and the management, including the board, the CEO, look, it’s second to none,” he said.
Zwane admitted that such backing makes it difficult to contemplate leaving suddenly, adding that he is enjoying his work and continuing to grow as a coach.
“This is a challenge I needed as a coach,” he said.
While speculation about his future continues, Zwane’s comments underline his attachment to the project at AmaZulu. He has not announced any decision to leave, and his immediate focus remains on building on the team’s encouraging league form.
