TS Galaxy coach Esau Mtsweni believes his side has a good chance of defeating Kaizer Chiefs when the two teams meet in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16.
The Rockets were drawn against Amakhosi during last Wednesday’s draw, setting up a challenging encounter against one of South African football’s biggest clubs.
Mtsweni has acknowledged that facing Chiefs will not be easy, but he believes cup matches offer different opportunities compared to league games. The TS Galaxy coach is confident that his players can rise to the occasion and secure a place in the next round.
“It’s a very tough game, to be honest with you, but at the same time I’m excited,” said Mtsweni.
“It should be an exciting game, and the players should be motivated and excited as well. Remember, there’s a difference between a league match and a cup game. It’s a different game. Anyone can win it, and hopefully it will be us. We’ve done it before, and we can still do it again.”
TS Galaxy coach Esau Mtsweni has criticised Kaizer Chiefs’ playing style, describing their formation as defensive while expressing confidence in his team’s chances of scoring against Amakhosi.
Mtsweni believes Chiefs’ reported 7-2-1 formation leaves opportunities for opponents to attack. He also compared watching the Soweto giants to popular South African comedy shows Velaphi and Sdumo, suggesting their matches have become entertaining.
The coach believes that using more attacking players could give his side opportunities to take advantage of the spaces available when facing a team that focuses heavily on defending.
However, Mtsweni also knows that TS Galaxy must prepare properly if they want to overcome the challenge posed by Chiefs. He explained that his technical team is considering different combinations ahead of the cup encounter.
When asked what his team needed to improve before facing the Soweto giants, Mtsweni said the priority was to find the right combination to help them secure a victory.
“I think for us, it would be nice to use a different combination going into the Chiefs game because all we need is a win so that we can get motivated going into our next match,” he said.
“So, we’re trying to find a different combination just to get ready for the next match.”
The Carling Knockout Cup presents TS Galaxy with an opportunity to progress in a competition where one result can determine a team’s future. Mtsweni will hope his players can turn their confidence into a strong performance against Amakhosi.
Chiefs, meanwhile, will be determined to progress to the next round, setting up an interesting contest between the two sides.
