Sekhukhune United head coach Papi Zothwane stepped in front of cameras on Thursday to confront the question that has consumed the club's supporters for weeks — where, exactly, is veteran defender Daniel Cardoso, and why does the captain keep watching matches from the stands?

Zothwane told journalists that the 35-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back faces a combination of physical management concerns and tactical considerations that together prompted the technical staff to withdraw him from recent matchday squads. The coach allegedly indicated that no disciplinary rift exists between the player and the dressing room, dismissing whispers of a fallout with teammates as unfounded speculation circulating on social media platforms.

Sekhukhune United's communications department confirmed that Cardoso remains a registered member of the squad under PSL regulations and continues to train daily at the club's Limpopo facilities. Investigators within the football media fraternity noted that the club issued no formal injury bulletin covering the South African international, leaving supporters without a concrete medical explanation for the prolonged omission from competitive action.

Cardoso joined the Babina Noko outfit ahead of the 2023-24 Betway Premiership campaign following his departure from Chiefs, where he earned a reputation as one of the division's most commanding aerial threats. His leadership credentials — he skippered various club sides throughout a career spanning fifteen-plus years — drove Sekhukhune's hierarchy to hand him the armband almost immediately upon his arrival in Limpopo.

During Thursday's training session, an observer at the facility spotted the distinctive orange-and-black captain's band lying draped over a cone near the halfway marker, uncollected, while squad members completed a high-intensity rondo drill nearby. That small, wordless image captured the uncertainty hanging over the club better than any press conference statement managed to articulate.

Zothwane maintained his composed public stance, insisting that every selection decision serves the collective rather than any individual — yet the answer supporters desperately want remains elusive. Whether Cardoso reclaims the armband before the Premiership season reaches its decisive stretch, or whether a younger centre-back permanently inherits the leadership mantle, nobody inside the club appears willing to say out loud.
