Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has explained why the Glamour Boys cannot expect to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates overnight, emphasising that building an elite football team requires patience, consistency and a long-term vision.

The Soweto giants have been working to restore their status among South Africa’s leading football clubs after enduring several difficult seasons. However, matching the standards set by Sundowns and Pirates remains a significant challenge for Amakhosi.

Da Cruz believes the process of assembling a competitive team capable of consistently challenging for major honours cannot be rushed. According to the Chiefs coach, building a team that can compete at the highest level requires more than recruiting new players or making changes to the technical department.

Instead, it involves establishing a clear football identity, improving squad quality, developing understanding among players and creating a winning mentality that can be sustained over time.

To illustrate his point, Da Cruz drew comparisons with European football, pointing to clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Arsenal, whose journeys towards establishing themselves among the elite demonstrate the importance of long-term planning.

PSG have invested heavily in assembling competitive squads and pursuing European success, while Arsenal have undergone a rebuilding process aimed at restoring their position among England’s leading clubs.

These examples highlight that even clubs with substantial resources and ambitious projects may need time before their plans translate into consistent success.

For Kaizer Chiefs, the challenge is particularly significant given the expectations that accompany the club’s history, passionate supporters and reputation as one of South Africa’s most recognisable football institutions.

The pressure to deliver trophies remains intense, but Da Cruz’s comments suggest that sustainable progress must take priority over expectations of immediate transformation.

Meanwhile, Sundowns have established themselves as a dominant force in the Premier Soccer League through sustained investment, squad depth and consistent performances. Pirates have also strengthened their position as serious contenders, increasing the pressure on Chiefs to improve.

Closing that gap will require Amakhosi to demonstrate greater consistency, make effective recruitment decisions and build a squad capable of competing across an entire season.

For Chiefs supporters, the message is clear: restoring the club to the summit of South African football will demand patience and sustained progress.

Ultimately, the Glamour Boys must turn their ambitions into results on the pitch if they are to challenge Sundowns and Pirates for domestic supremacy.
