The CAF Champions League second preliminary round concluded on Sunday night, with six more teams securing qualification for the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition. The results confirmed the latest additions to the group-stage lineup as clubs across the continent completed their battles for a place among Africa’s elite.
Orlando Pirates will represent South Africa in the group stages, while three other South African clubs have also progressed in the competition, strengthening the country’s presence in African football. The qualified teams will now prepare for a more demanding phase, where consistency and tactical discipline will be crucial to their ambitions of reaching the knockout rounds.
Several dramatic encounters marked the conclusion of the qualifying round, with teams battling to protect first-leg advantages and others producing impressive comebacks to keep their continental campaigns alive.
In one encounter, Christopher Ibayi scored in the second half to put the home side ahead. However, Kevin Bakare restored parity before Khalid Baba scored the decisive goal for the visitors, helping them eliminate the Ivorian champions and secure progression.
Another standout result came from Mauritanian champions Nouadhibou, who defeated San Pedro 2-0 in the second leg to claim a 3-2 aggregate victory.
San Pedro entered the match with an advantage from the first leg, but Nouadhibou delivered a determined performance in front of their supporters. Kartier Dembele opened the scoring, giving the hosts hope of overturning the deficit.
Nouadhibou maintained their attacking pressure after the break, and Cheikh Hattab struck eight minutes into the second half to make it 2-0 on the night. The goal proved decisive, completing the Mauritanian side’s comeback and ending San Pedro’s continental campaign.
With the preliminary rounds concluded, attention now shifts to the group-stage draw, where the qualified clubs will discover their opponents.
Orlando Pirates will be eager to compete strongly against Africa’s leading teams as they pursue continental glory. The group stages are expected to deliver challenging fixtures, with every club aiming to secure a place in the knockout rounds and move closer to lifting the prestigious trophy.
