Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry “Legs of Thunder” Skosana has expressed disappointment over what he believes is the lack of recognition he receives from the Soweto giants despite his contribution to the club’s history.
Skosana believes Orlando Pirates should do more to honour former players who helped establish the club’s reputation and build a lasting connection with its supporters. According to the former striker, his status as a player who contributed to the Buccaneers’ history has not translated into the recognition or privileges he expected.
One of his major frustrations is the process of attending Pirates matches. Skosana claims that he is still required to queue alongside ordinary supporters to purchase tickets when he wants to watch the club play.
“I don't feel treated as a legend by Orlando Pirates,” Skosana said.
He further complained about the lack of complimentary club merchandise, arguing that such gestures would demonstrate greater appreciation for former players who played a role in the club’s development.
“I am made to queue with supporters to buy my own tickets to the stadium. I don't even get free Pirates merchandise,” he added.
His comments have sparked a broader debate about how football clubs should recognise their former stars. For many supporters, legends represent more than their achievements on the pitch, as they remain important links between different generations of fans and the club’s history.
Skosana also clarified previous comments in which he suggested that Pirates had “bought” their league title. He explained that the remark was made jokingly and was not driven by bitterness towards the club.
Pirates ended their 14-year wait for the league championship in May 2026, defeating Orbit College 2-0 to secure the Betway Premiership title and complete a domestic treble.
While Skosana’s latest comments are unlikely to erase his place in Pirates’ history, they have raised questions about whether the club could do more to ensure former players feel valued and respected long after their playing careers have ended.
