Sundowns Midfielder Delivers Impressive Performance Despite Fitness Concerns

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teboho Mokoena showed his importance to the team with an impressive individual performance against USM Alger, despite reportedly not being fully fit for the encounter.

The midfielder played the entire 90 minutes and produced encouraging numbers, demonstrating his influence in the middle of the park. Although he was not at 100 per cent, Mokoena remained one of Sundowns' standout performers statistically.

He received a rating of 7.1 out of 10 after making 99 touches during the match. His involvement showed how much responsibility he carried in helping Sundowns control possession and build attacks.

Mokoena completed 68 of his 85 attempted passes, giving him an accuracy rate of 80 per cent. He also created two key passes, showing that his contribution was not limited to keeping possession but also included trying to unlock the opposition defence.

Defensively, the midfielder was equally important. He recorded eight recoveries and won all three of his attempted tackles. These numbers highlighted his ability to contribute when Sundowns were without the ball and help his teammates regain possession.

His performance also included four progressive carries, showing his willingness to move the ball forward and help the team transition from defence into attack.

Mokoena was also involved in Sundowns' attacking efforts, registering four shots during the encounter. One of those attempts came from inside the penalty area, while the other three were from outside the box. He also recorded one touch inside the opposition penalty area.

However, his ground-duel statistics showed that he won three of his six battles, representing a 50 per cent success rate.

Despite the physical challenge of playing for the full 90 minutes while not completely fit, Mokoena maintained a strong presence throughout the encounter. His statistics underline the value he brings to the Sundowns midfield through his passing, defensive work and ability to carry the ball forward.

For Sundowns, having a player capable of producing such numbers even when not at his best is a significant advantage. Mokoena remains an important figure in the team's midfield, and his performance against USM Alger once again demonstrated his influence.

His individual display deserves recognition, particularly given the fitness concerns surrounding him ahead of the match.
