INJURY TRAGEDY & NO GOALS: Mokoena Stretchered Off As Sundowns Suffer Angolan Disaster

Sundowns Held to Goalless Draw by Wiliete SC as Champions League Tie Hangs in the Balance

African champions Mamelodi Sundowns were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by Angolan side Wiliete SC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie on Sunday evening, leaving everything to play for in the return fixture.

The result means that neither side could establish an advantage in the opening encounter, setting up a decisive second leg in which Sundowns will need to deliver a stronger attacking performance to keep their continental ambitions on track.

For the Brazilians, the goalless stalemate will be viewed as a missed opportunity to take control of the tie before the return meeting. However, keeping a clean sheet away from home could still prove valuable as they prepare for the next chapter of their Champions League campaign.

Sundowns entered the contest with the responsibility that comes with being African champions. Expectations remain high whenever the Tshwane giants compete on the continental stage, particularly as they seek to maintain their status among Africa's leading clubs.

However, Wiliete SC demonstrated that they should not be underestimated. The Angolan outfit managed to hold their more experienced opponents without conceding, ensuring that the tie remains evenly balanced heading into the return fixture.

Sundowns had opportunities to break the deadlock, but their finishing let them down. Brayan León came close within the first five minutes after being set up by Nuno Santos, only for a Wiliete defender to clear his effort off the line. Teboho Mokoena and Tashreeq Matthews also threatened, but the hosts remained resolute.

The match was delayed by 30 minutes because of adverse weather conditions and the risk of lightning. Once the game began, Sundowns attempted to impose their familiar possession-based style, but Wiliete's defensive organisation made it difficult for the visitors to turn their possession into goals.

There was also concern for Sundowns after Mokoena was forced off with an injury before half-time. Bathusi Aubaas came on to replace the midfielder, leaving head coach Miguel Cardoso with another fitness issue to monitor.

Wiliete grew more competitive after the break and created opportunities of their own. Goalkeeper Ricardo Goss was called into action to keep the Angolan side at bay, while Sundowns continued searching for a decisive breakthrough.

Tashreeq Matthews and substitute Iqraam Rayners also had opportunities to put the South African champions ahead, but neither could find the back of the net. Wiliete ultimately held firm to earn a valuable draw against one of the continent's strongest teams.

The result leaves the qualification battle wide open, with Sundowns set to enjoy home advantage when the two teams meet again at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, 23 October.

For the Brazilians, the objective will be clear: convert their chances, maintain defensive discipline and secure the victory needed to advance to the CAF Champions League group stage.

Although the first leg did not produce the result Sundowns wanted, the tie remains firmly within their reach. Their experience, squad depth and home support could prove decisive, but Wiliete have already shown they are capable of making life difficult for the defending champions.

With a place in the group stage at stake, the second leg promises to be a crucial test of Sundowns' continental ambitions. All remains to play for as the African champions prepare to finish the job on home soil.
