Warren Gatland Backs Springboks for 2027 Rugby World Cup but Highlights One Big Concern

Warren Gatland has backed South Africa’s Springboks as favourites to win the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia, but the former Wales and British and Irish Lions coach believes injuries to key players could make the competition more difficult for the defending champions.

The Springboks have established themselves as one of international rugby’s strongest teams after winning consecutive Rugby World Cup titles in 2019 and 2023. Under head coach Rassie Erasmus, South Africa have combined physical strength, tactical discipline and attacking quality to maintain their position among the leading nations.

Gatland believes these qualities make the team difficult to overcome. However, he warned that losing one or two important players could significantly affect their chances of securing another world title.

“I think they (South Africa) will be favourites (for the 2027 World Cup). It depends on whether you lose one or two key players picking up injuries. I think a lot of those teams in the next twelve months will be working exceptionally hard to bridge that gap with South Africa.”

His assessment highlights the importance of squad depth and fitness as the tournament approaches. Although the Springboks have several experienced players, their rivals are expected to improve and prepare carefully to challenge their dominance.

Gatland also praised South Africa’s overall playing style, pointing to their powerful set pieces, attacking flair, pace and physical presence. He believes opponents will need to produce exceptional performances to defeat them.

“If you’re going to beat South Africa, it’s probably going to be in an arm wrestle and it’s going to be a tight game,” he explained.

Despite his confidence in the Springboks, Gatland identified New Zealand, England, France and Argentina as potential challengers. He also acknowledged improvements in Australian rugby, suggesting that the hosts could become a stronger force when the competition begins.

Another major talking point is the possibility of a quarter-final meeting between South Africa and New Zealand. Such a clash could create an early exit for one of the tournament favourites and provide other nations with an opportunity to advance further.

Gatland believes teams must accept the draw and concentrate on performing rather than complain about potential match-ups.

Beyond the World Cup, he also considers South Africa strong contenders for the inaugural Nations Championship, although New Zealand could challenge them.

Ultimately, the Springboks have the experience and quality to defend their crown, but maintaining player fitness and managing competition from improving rivals will be crucial to their 2027 ambitions.
