Orlando Pirates’ reserve side delivered a strong response on Saturday morning, recording an emphatic 4-1 victory over Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Diski Challenge.
The defending champions were determined to recover from their disappointing opening-round result, when they suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs. However, the Buccaneers showed significant improvement in their latest outing, producing a confident attacking display that earned them their first three points of the campaign.
Aphelele Nzimande and Khumoetsile Van Schalkwyk played central roles in Pirates’ commanding performance. Both attackers scored twice, with their respective braces accounting for all four goals scored by the Buccaneers. Their finishing ability proved too much for the Stellenbosch defence throughout the encounter.
The victory also demonstrated Pirates’ ability to respond positively after an early setback. Following their loss in the opening Soweto Derby, the young players showed composure and determination rather than allowing the result to derail their campaign.
Expectations are particularly high around Pirates after the club achieved a major milestone last season. The Buccaneers won the DStv Diski Challenge championship for the first time, completing their title-winning campaign with a 2-0 victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in their final league match of the 2025/26 season.
As defending champions, Pirates are expected to remain among the leading contenders this season. Their latest performance will further strengthen those expectations, particularly after an impressive attacking display against Stellenbosch.
