Former Kaizer Chiefs Star Taken To Court Over Unpaid Vehicle Installments

In a case involving an allegedly unpaid luxury car financing arrangement, credit management business Shackleton petitioned the Johannesburg High Court, bringing George Lebese, a former player for Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns, to face a claim surpassing R578,000.

The former South African footballer allegedly fell behind on payments for a car financed through WesBank in 2019, and Shackleton filed papers last week seeking judgment against him, according to Africa Daily's report. Upon approaching the court, the corporation said that the overdue sum had surpassed R500,000.

According to the court records, on June 26, 2019, WesBank, which is a branch of FirstRand Bank, and Lebese electronically executed an agreement for the sale of installments. According to the report, the agreement included a luxury saloon that was valued at over R1.3 million.

An initiation fee, financing costs, the cash price of the car, accessories, service and delivery charges, and a total purchase consideration of R865,293.84 are all included in the documentation. Lebese reportedly agreed to pay a deposit of R60,000, followed by monthly installments of more than R12,000 over 72 months.

The original due date for the first installment was June 26, 2019, and the last payment was July 25, 2025. Until all outstanding amounts were paid in full, the agreement stated that ownership of the vehicle would remain with WesBank.

Shackleton later obtained the rights to the debt by a documented deed of cession completed on June 26, 2025, having retroactive effect from April 1 that year.

Lebese is alleged to have violated the agreement by not making the necessary payments, according to the company. It also alleges that it issued him a registered notice in compliance with the National Credit Act, advising him of the alleged default and describing alternatives accessible to him, including debt counselling and alternative dispute resolution.

Lebese did not go after those possibilities, says Shackleton. The remaining payment is owed immediately, according to the corporation, because the arrangement was canceled.

The court papers reportedly seek payment of R578,004.05, together with legal costs on an attorney-and-client scale.

Lebese did not respond to phone calls or written questions sent to him before publication, according to the report. The claim remains a matter for the court, and the allegations do not establish that judgment has been granted against him.
