Belgian Journalist Explains What Makes Mofokeng Stand Out At Union SG

South African international Relebohile Mofokeng is earning praise at Belgian club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, with his performances highlighting the impact he makes beyond scoring goals and providing assists.

Belgian football publication Walfoot has recognised the former Orlando Pirates forward's growing influence on the team's attacking approach and overall performances since arriving in Belgium.

Mofokeng has made an encouraging start to his career at Union Saint-Gilloise, recording four goals and two assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. His contributions have become particularly important as the club deals with several absences among its attacking players.

According to Walfoot, the 21-year-old has helped fill the gap left by Promise David, who joined Brighton and Hove Albion, and Mohammed Fuseini, who moved to Derby County. Union have also encountered difficulties involving other attacking options, including Ilan Hurtevent, Kevin Rodriguez and Mateo Biondic, who have experienced injuries or other setbacks.

Despite these challenges, Union Saint-Gilloise have continued to demonstrate impressive attacking strength. The Belgian publication reported that the club had scored 27 goals in nine Pro League matches, in addition to eight goals in three European fixtures.

Journalist Scott Crabbe praised Mofokeng for making an immediate impression at the club instead of needing an extended period to adapt to his new surroundings. Despite his young age, the winger has already shown that he can make a meaningful contribution to the team's performances.

Crabbe also highlighted qualities that cannot be measured by goals and assists alone, pointing to Mofokeng's pace, technical ability and intelligent movement as important elements of Union's attacking play.

Rather than relying solely on runs behind opposition defenders, Mofokeng regularly moves into deeper positions to receive the ball and link the midfield with the forward line. This approach helps create space for his teammates and gives the team additional options when attempting to break down opposing defences.

His ability to operate in different attacking situations has therefore become a valuable asset for Union Saint-Gilloise, particularly while the club manages its current injury and squad challenges.

Mofokeng's performances suggest that his contribution extends beyond the statistics recorded beside his name. His movement, creativity and ability to connect different areas of the pitch have helped strengthen Union's attacking options.

As he continues to settle into Belgian football, the South African winger will be looking to build on his promising start and establish himself as an increasingly influential figure in the team's campaign.
