MNGQITHI BOMBSHELL! Former Sundowns Coach Breaks Silence on Aziz Ki Fallout at Young Africans
JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 29 October 2026
South African football coach Manqoba Mngqithi has opened up about reports linking his shock departure from Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC to an alleged disagreement with star midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki, raising fresh questions about the circumstances surrounding his short-lived spell at the club.
Speaking on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified with Andile Ncube, Mngqithi addressed speculation that his relationship with the Burkina Faso international had deteriorated, suggesting that tactical differences may have played a role in the situation.
“I don’t think the issue revolves around me playing Aziz, and I would be lying if I said that; I don’t want to create the wrong impression,” Mngqithi said.
He added that the club’s management was aware of Aziz Ki’s importance and suggested the midfielder might have communicated concerns about playing under his tactical system.
“What I can tell you, what I think is the case, is that it is possible Aziz might have spoken to some members of management to indicate that he would not like to play in my system,” the coach explained.
However, Mngqithi stopped short of confirming that the midfielder was responsible for his departure, leaving the reported disagreement open to interpretation.
Mngqithi’s Sudden Young Africans Exit
The former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor parted ways with Young Africans in October 2026 after approximately three months in charge, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that had initially shown considerable promise.
During his time at the Tanzanian club, Mngqithi guided the team to the Community Shield title and secured qualification for the CAF Champions League group stages.
Reports indicate that Young Africans recorded 10 victories, two draws and one defeat in 13 matches across all competitions under his leadership.
Despite that impressive overall record, pressure reportedly increased following a 2-1 defeat to arch-rivals Simba SC and a goalless draw against TRA United.
The results left Young Africans five points behind Simba in the domestic league standings, adding to scrutiny surrounding the coach’s position.
The club announced his departure without publicly confirming that an alleged dispute involving Aziz Ki was the reason for the decision.
Tactical Differences Raise Questions
Mngqithi’s comments have reignited debate about the balance between a coach’s tactical authority and the influence of key players at major football clubs.
Aziz Ki is an established attacking midfielder whose creativity makes him an important figure for Young Africans. However, Mngqithi’s remarks suggest there may have been differences over how the player fitted into his preferred approach.
The coach’s explanation does not establish that Aziz Ki sought his dismissal, and the midfielder’s alleged communication with management remains unconfirmed.
For South African football supporters, the situation represents another intriguing chapter in Mngqithi’s coaching career following his departure from one of Tanzania’s biggest clubs.
Do you think Manqoba Mngqithi was unfairly dismissed by Young Africans, or did the club have legitimate reasons to end his tenure?
