Petro de Luanda Lodge CAF Complaint Against South African Referee Abongile Tom After Shock Defeat
Angolan football giants Petro de Luanda have reportedly lodged an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against South African referee Abongile Tom following their 2-0 defeat against Scottland in the CAF Champions League.
According to information received by KickOff, the Angolan club has formally raised concerns over Tom’s officiating during the match, placing the spotlight on the South African referee and the standards of refereeing in African football’s premier club competition.
The complaint comes after a disappointing result for Petro de Luanda, who were unable to secure a positive outcome against Scottland. While the precise details of the club’s allegations have not been made public, the decision to approach CAF suggests that Petro want the match officials’ performance to receive an official review.
The major point of contention is the early dismissal of Petro goalkeeper Hugo Marques, who was shown a straight red card after rushing out of his penalty area and challenging a Scottland attacker. The decision left the Angolan side with 10 players for almost the entire contest and forced coach João Pedro Sousa to reorganise his team immediately.
Petro subsequently struggled to contain their opponents, although they defended resolutely for much of the first half. Scottland eventually broke the deadlock in the 66th minute through former Kaizer Chiefs winger Khama Billiat, before Knowledge Musona added a second goal to secure the Zimbabwean club’s victory.
The result has put Scottland in a strong position ahead of the return leg in Angola, where Petro must produce a significant improvement to keep their hopes of reaching the Champions League group stage alive.
Petro have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the red-card decision, describing the dismissal as unjust in their official match report. The club believes the incident had a major influence on the outcome, given that they were forced to play with a numerical disadvantage from the opening moments.
The reported complaint to CAF could now bring further attention to the match officials’ performance. However, the precise allegations submitted by Petro and any formal response from the continental governing body remain to be established.
For Tom, the controversy represents another difficult moment following questions raised about his decisions during the MTN8 final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates earlier this month. His latest performance has renewed discussion among football supporters and analysts about refereeing standards in high-pressure African competitions.
CAF’s handling of the complaint will be closely watched, particularly if the governing body decides to review the incidents highlighted by the Angolan club. Any assessment would need to consider the applicable laws of the game and the referee’s interpretation of the match situations.
For now, Petro must focus on the decisive return fixture while awaiting developments surrounding their reported protest. With qualification still within reach, the Angolan giants will hope to turn their home advantage into a comeback and prevent their continental campaign from ending prematurely.
