Kaizer Chiefs Recruitment Bombshell! Mtasingwa’s Injury Worries Raise Big Questions As Fans Point To Poggenpoel And Bance
Kaizer Chiefs supporters are once again debating whether Amakhosi are making the right decisions in the transfer market, with the early injury setbacks suffered by new signing Adolf Mtasingwa raising concerns about the club’s recruitment strategy.
The Tanzanian midfielder arrived at Naturena from Azam FC in July 2026, bringing international experience and a reputation as a disciplined defensive midfielder. Chiefs confirmed his signing on 21 July, describing him as an experienced addition to the squad. However, his start to life in South Africa has been interrupted by fitness problems, leaving some supporters questioning whether the club adequately assessed its midfield needs before committing to the signing.
Mtasingwa’s injury concerns have become more noticeable because Chiefs have struggled with several unavailable players during the opening stages of the 2026/27 campaign.
Head coach Fernando da Cruz confirmed before the Stellenbosch FC match on 13 October that Mtasingwa, Lebohang Maboe, Siphesihle Ndlovu, Langelihle Phili and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen were unavailable. The injuries placed additional pressure on the available midfield options and contributed to questions about squad depth.
Mtasingwa also arrived late in pre-season, and Da Cruz previously explained that the midfielder needed time to adapt to the team’s playing model and South African football. Former Chiefs defender Dominic Isaacs similarly urged patience, pointing to the difficulty of adjusting to a new environment.
That context matters: an injury setback does not automatically make a signing a mistake. Nevertheless, supporters are entitled to ask whether recruitment decisions adequately balance talent, medical history, tactical suitability and the likelihood of a player being available throughout a demanding season.
Brooklyn Poggenpoel has emerged as a name in the debate after former Orlando Pirates winger Lebohang “Cheeseboy” Mokoena recommended Chiefs as a potential destination for the Durban City midfielder. Mokoena praised Poggenpoel’s technical ability and believed he could compete for regular first-team football at Naturena. However, this recommendation is not confirmation that Chiefs made a formal bid for him.
Ibrahim Bance is another player supporters may bring into the discussion. The Burkina Faso midfielder impressed at Marumo Gallants last season, but he has already joined Chippa United as a free agent, with the signing confirmed in August. Reports also indicated that Chiefs were not pursuing him at that stage, despite speculation linking him to the club.
For Chiefs, the challenge is not simply finding talented footballers. It is building a balanced squad with dependable options in every position, particularly in midfield, where injuries can quickly expose a lack of depth.
Mtasingwa still has an opportunity to demonstrate his value when fit and settled. The fairest assessment will come from his performances over time, rather than from early setbacks alone.
