Wiliete SC head coach Beto Bianchi has explained how his team managed to contain Mamelodi Sundowns during their CAF Champions League second qualifying round first-leg encounter in Angola.
The Angolan outfit held the South African champions to a goalless draw, ensuring that neither side gained an advantage ahead of the decisive return fixture.
Sundowns went into the match hoping to use their continental experience and attacking quality to secure a positive result. However, Wiliete proved to be a difficult opponent, displaying impressive defensive discipline and determination throughout the contest.
According to Bianchi, his team's tactical approach played a significant role in frustrating the Brazilians. Wiliete focused on maintaining a compact defensive structure, closing down spaces and preventing Sundowns from creating clear-cut scoring opportunities.
Holding a team with Sundowns' reputation without scoring was an encouraging result for the Angolan side. Their performance demonstrated the importance of organisation, concentration and effective tactical preparation when facing experienced opponents in continental competitions.
For Sundowns, the draw was a missed opportunity to establish an advantage before the second leg. The South African champions will now need to improve their attacking efficiency and find ways to break through Wiliete's stubborn defence.
With the first encounter ending without goals, the tie remains evenly balanced. Wiliete will hope to maintain their defensive discipline, while Sundowns must make better use of their scoring opportunities.
The return leg will ultimately determine which team progresses to the next stage of the competition.
