Former Bafana Bafana Coach Augusto Palacios Backs Doctor Khumalo’s SAFA Appointment

Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios has welcomed Doctor “16V” Khumalo’s appointment to the South African Football Association (SAFA) Technical Committee, expressing confidence that the South African football legend has the knowledge and experience needed to contribute to the development of the game.

Khumalo’s appointment has generated considerable interest among South African football supporters, with many welcoming the decision to give one of the country's most respected football figures a greater role in influencing the sport's future.

Palacios, who previously worked with Khumalo during their time together at Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs, understands the former midfielder's abilities and football intelligence. His support for the appointment adds to the positive reactions surrounding Khumalo's new responsibilities within SAFA.

The former Kaizer Chiefs star has been appointed vice-chairperson of the SAFA Technical Committee, serving under chairperson Jack Maluleke. The committee plays an important role in shaping the technical direction of South African football, including evaluating national-team performances and contributing to decisions concerning coaching appointments.

SAFA president Danny Jordaan confirmed Khumalo's appointment following a meeting of the association's National Executive Committee in Sandton, Johannesburg.

At 59, Khumalo brings decades of football experience from both his playing and coaching career. He was a key member of the Bafana Bafana team that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, a historic achievement that remains one of the proudest moments in South African football.

His contribution to Kaizer Chiefs also cemented his status as one of the club's most celebrated figures. Known for his technical ability, creativity and vision, Khumalo earned widespread admiration during his playing days.

Beyond his achievements on the pitch, the football legend has also gained experience in coaching and analysis. His involvement with clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs and Baroka FC has allowed him to develop a broader understanding of the challenges facing players and coaches.

His new role within SAFA provides an opportunity to apply that experience to important areas of the game, including identifying promising talent, improving coaching standards and assessing the performance of national teams.

The Technical Committee also contributes to the process of identifying and recommending coaches for South Africa's national teams. Its responsibilities make it an important part of the country's efforts to improve football development and maintain competitiveness at international level.

Khumalo has previously emphasised the importance of approaching his appointment as an opportunity to serve South African football rather than simply celebrating a personal achievement.

With Palacios publicly supporting his appointment, expectations will be high for the former Bafana Bafana midfielder to use his experience to make a meaningful contribution behind the scenes.

Ultimately, Khumalo's success in the position will depend on how effectively he translates his football knowledge into practical initiatives that benefit national teams, coaches and emerging players.

South African football supporters will be watching closely to see how his involvement in the Technical Committee helps shape the future direction of the game.
