Monnapule Saleng returned to competitive action for the first time since March when he came off the bench for Mamelodi Sundowns in their Carling Knockout Cup round-of-16 win against Marumo Gallants on Tuesday night. The 28-year-old winger entered the game at Loftus Versfeld in the 83rd minute, replacing Antonio van Wyk, as Sundowns held on for a 1-0 victory. Siyanda Ndlovu had given the hosts the lead in the 20th minute, and the result booked their place in the quarter-finals.
Saleng’s appearance was short, lasting only the final seven minutes, but it marked a meaningful step for a player who has endured a difficult start to the season. He had been kept out of the first-team picture for roughly six months after personal challenges and issues around his attitude in training and the dressing room. Reports indicated he spent time training separately from the senior group before being gradually brought back into the fold. His last competitive minutes had come in March, leaving him on the sidelines through the end of the previous campaign and the opening stages of this one.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso made it clear that the decision to introduce Saleng was deliberate. Speaking after the match, the Portuguese manager explained that the club does not believe in simply excluding players from the process. He said Saleng had been given time to reflect, improve his consistency in training, and address areas that needed change. Cardoso added that bringing him on against Gallants was meant as proof of trust, noting that he could have chosen a more defensive option to protect the lead but preferred to give Saleng the chance to step onto the field.
The coach stressed that further opportunities will depend on performance. Saleng will be judged in the same way as every other player in the squad. Consistent displays in training and matches will earn him more game time, while fluctuations will limit his chances. With competition high in the attacking positions, the former Orlando Pirates player still has work to do to secure a regular role.
The cameo itself did not produce a headline moment, yet it carried weight after such a long absence. For Saleng, it was a chance to show he remains part of Cardoso’s plans. For Sundowns, it offered a reminder of the talent they have available as they push for domestic success and look to recover from their recent exit in the CAF Champions League. How he builds on these few minutes will determine whether this return becomes the start of a stronger second half of the season.
