Chiefs Handed Timely Boost Ahead of Must-Win Clash

Kaizer Chiefs have received a welcome lift ahead of their crucial continental match against Red Arrows. The Soweto giants travel to Durban knowing they must overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit if they want to keep their CAF Confederation Cup hopes alive.

The second leg of the preliminary round tie takes place tonight at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kick-off is set for 18:00. Amakhosi lost the opening fixture in Ndola last weekend when Alassane Diarra scored late for the Zambian side. A victory is now required for Chiefs to progress to the group stage.

In a timely boost, midfielder Lebohang Maboe has returned to the squad. The 30-year-old travelled with the team to Durban and took part fully in preparations. Maboe suffered an ankle injury in the second half of Chiefs’ recent league match against Golden Arrows. That setback had raised questions about his immediate availability.

Since returning to Naturena earlier this season, Maboe has become an important part of the side. He has made regular appearances and added quality in the final third. He also scored his first goal contribution for the club when he converted a penalty against Richards Bay.

Coach Fernando Da Cruz is expected to use Maboe carefully. A lack of recent match minutes means the experienced playmaker is unlikely to start. His knowledge of continental football, however, makes him a valuable option from the bench. If Da Cruz decides against using him, midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko is ready to fill the role once more.

The return of Maboe gives Amakhosi an extra attacking option at a moment when they need it most. Chiefs have struggled for goals in recent weeks, and the midfielder’s ability to create chances could prove useful against a Red Arrows side that will look to protect their lead.

All eyes will be on Moses Mabhida Stadium tonight. The home support will hope to push the Glamour Boys over the line. With a place in the Confederation Cup group stage on the line, every player available — including Maboe — could make a difference as Kaizer Chiefs chase the result they need.
