Mvala Edges Closer to Sundowns Contract Extension Despite Injury Setbacks
Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly working towards extending Mothobi Mvala’s contract, with the experienced defender continuing to enjoy the club’s confidence despite a challenging season disrupted by injury.
The towering centre-back has been with the Brazilians since 2020 and has established himself as an important figure in the squad. His physical presence, defensive experience and leadership qualities have made him a valuable option at the back, particularly when partnering Grant Kekana in central defence.
Although injuries have limited his involvement this season, Sundowns appear keen to retain his services beyond his current contract, which is reportedly due to expire in June. The club’s willingness to consider an extension highlights the value they place on his experience and influence within the dressing room.
Mvala’s recent campaign has been particularly frustrating. After undergoing knee surgery, the defender has struggled to maintain his availability and has reportedly managed just two appearances this season. His recovery also affected his chances of representing Bafana Bafana at major international tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
For a player who has previously contributed significantly to Sundowns’ defensive options, the extended absence has represented a difficult period. However, his situation has not diminished the importance the club attaches to having experienced players who understand its demands and ambitions.
Head coach Miguel Cardoso has acknowledged that Mvala has returned to training with the team, while emphasising that a complete recovery involves more than simply rejoining his teammates on the training ground.
“Mothobi is training with the team, but not for a long time. Considering the long-term injury he had, there's not only his return to training but his return to performance,” Cardoso explained.
The coach’s comments underline the careful approach Sundowns are taking as they work to bring the defender back to full fitness. After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, rebuilding match sharpness and confidence will be essential before Mvala can be expected to make a consistent contribution again.
Since arriving at Chloorkop in 2020, Mvala has reportedly made 119 appearances for Sundowns, scoring seven goals and providing four assists. Those figures reflect his contribution to the club over several seasons, including his ability to offer an attacking threat from set-pieces.
With Sundowns competing for domestic and continental honours, retaining experienced players remains an important part of maintaining squad depth and stability.
While an extension has yet to be officially confirmed, the reported discussions offer encouragement for Mvala as he continues his rehabilitation. If he can regain full fitness, the defender could still have an important role to play in Sundowns’ plans beyond the current campaign.
