Magesi FC restored their three-point lead at the top of the Motsepe Foundation Championship after beating Gomora United 2-1 at Seshego Stadium on Saturday.
Dikwena Tsa Meetse took the lead just before half-time through Nyakala Raphadu. Gomora fought back and equalised later in the game, but Magesi found a winner through key attacker Tshepo Mashigo. The victory keeps the table-toppers in firm control while Gomora’s long winless run continues.
Hungry Lions and Lerumo Lions both climbed the standings with solid wins. Hungry Lions beat bottom side Venda FC 1-0 at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in a hard-fought match. The result cemented their place in fourth position. Venda remain rooted at the bottom with only one point and no wins from eight matches.
Lerumo Lions returned to winning ways with a convincing 3-0 victory over Leicesterford City. Sizwe Sithole opened the scoring with a fine finish from outside the box, and Nasiphi Bhanayi added a brace. The win moved Lerumo Lions up to fifth and kept their promotion hopes alive. Leicesterford City suffered their third defeat in a row.
Cape Town City also made progress, recording a third straight win. They beat winless Orbit College 2-1 to jump into second place. Real Native drew 1-1 with Highbury and dropped to third. Other results saw North West University beat University of Pretoria 2-1, Upington City edge Midlands Wanderers 1-0 to move into the top half, and Hope FC beat The Bees 1-0 to climb to seventh.
The round of matches has tightened the race at the top while leaving several sides with work to do at the bottom. Magesi hold a clear advantage, but Hungry Lions and Lerumo Lions have shown they can push for higher positions as the season continues. Promotion places remain the big prize for the sides climbing the Motsepe Foundation Championship table.
