Sweden enters the upcoming European Women’s Handball Championship with a squad featuring nine new players compared to the team that competed at the World Championship a year ago. Head coach Tomas Axnér has named an 18-player roster for the tournament running from December 3 to 20, 2026, navigating a massive generational shift triggered by retirements, pregnancies, and injuries.

Retirements and Pregnancies Reshape the National Team

A significant amount of veteran experience has vanished from the Swedish national team over the past year. High-profile players Jamina Roberts, Nathalie Hagman, and Anna Lagerquist have all stepped away, with Lagerquist and Hagman retiring permanently while Roberts ended her international career. Furthermore, pregnancies sidelined veterans Linn Blohm, Linn Hansson, and goalkeeper Filippa Idéhn. Additional injuries compounded the roster turnover, leaving head coach Tomas Axnér with nine new faces relative to last year’s World Championship campaign.

This turnover formalized a sweeping generational transition for the squad. Six players will make their major championship debuts when Sweden opens tournament play: Stina Littorin, Emma Olsson, Isabelle Rydén, Hanna Lundvall, Charité Mumbongo, and Emma Wahlström. Emma Olsson earned her first championship selection at age 29 after missing the autumn with injuries, while returning veteran Johanna Bundsen enters her 14th major international tournament with 184 appearances.

Lowered Expectations and Group Stage Opponents

Sweden enters this European Championship with tempered expectations following a disappointing 15th-place finish at the previous year’s World Championship, where the team originally traveled with medal aspirations. Tomas Axnér evaluated the team’s current continental standing more conservatively, placing Sweden somewhere around seventh to tenth in Europe.

We are quite aware that performances can swing a bit, and that one day can look a bit better or worse than the day before, Tomas Axnér said. But we believe very much in this squad both in the short and the long perspective.

The tournament format distributes group-play matches across five different countries. Sweden begins its campaign in Bratislava, Slovakia, competing alongside Germany, tournament host Slovakia, and Serbia. Germany enters as the group favorite, with Sweden projected to secure second place. The top two teams from each group advance to the main round, with matches also hosted in Brno, Czech Republic, Antalya, Turkey, and Oradea and Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Nina Koppang Returns After Mental Health Break

The roster announcement brought a major boost with the return of 24-year-old Nina Koppang. Koppang chose to pause her handball career in the spring due to mental health struggles, which included parting ways with Danish club Esbjerg and stepping away from the sport for half a year before returning with Sävehof ahead of the current club season.

She can spice up our attacking play above all, Tomas Axnér told regarding Koppang. A player who with her physique and explosiveness can also create room and space for other players. We think that can be important for us.

The 18-player squad selected for the tournament is supported by four development players called up for the pre-camp in Halmstad from November 23 to 28: Isabel van Kerkvoorde, Klara Bergling, Selma Hestner Olsson, and Stina Wiksfors. Sweden’s final preparations include a double-header against Iceland during the run-up, with matches scheduled for November 26 in Malmö and November 28 in Halmstad.

Tournament Schedule and Upcoming Matches

Sweden opens its European Championship schedule in Bratislava against Germany on December 4, followed by a match against Slovakia on December 6, and concludes group play against Serbia on December 8.
