Kaizer Chiefs are closing in on the signing of South African international Elias Mokwana, with the club and the player understood to have reached an agreement.

The former Sekhukhune United winger, who most recently featured for Tunisian giants Espérance Sportive de Tunis, is expected to be unveiled as an Amakhosi player once he has completed his medical examinations.

Mokwana has been a free agent since September, when he and Espérance mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was due to run until June 2027.

The agreement represents a breakthrough in Chiefs’ long-standing pursuit of the attacker, who was already on the club’s radar before joining the Tunisian giants in August 2024.

Espérance won the race for his signature at the time, but Amakhosi have now moved to secure the services of a player they have admired for more than two years.

Mokwana joined Espérance from Sekhukhune United in August 2024 and registered seven goals and four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions, helping the Tunisian outfit secure a domestic double.

He subsequently spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Saudi Arabian side Al-Hazem, where he made 26 appearances, scoring once and providing three assists.

The winger was also part of Bafana Bafana’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, although he missed out on selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A move to Naturena would also fulfil a long-standing ambition for Mokwana, who previously revealed that he grew up supporting Kaizer Chiefs, despite his father being an Orlando Pirates supporter.

For Amakhosi, his potential arrival comes at a time when the club is looking to strengthen its attacking options following a difficult start to the campaign.

Chiefs have already suffered early exits from the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup, while Saturday’s 2-1 Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates has added further pressure on head coach Fernando Da Cruz.

The Frenchman has previously highlighted the need for different attacking profiles to make his team less predictable.

Amakhosi have already secured the signatures of Langelihle Phili and Faiz Abrahams from Stellenbosch FC, with Mokwana now poised to add further experience, pace and attacking depth to the squad.

His arrival would offer Da Cruz another attacking option as Chiefs look to turn their fortunes around and revive their campaign.
