Six goals in six Bundesliga matches have thrust Werder Bremen striker Niclas Füllkrug back into the conversation for the German national team, prompting an evaluation from national coach Jürgen Klopp and enthusiastic support from club manager Daniel Thioune. Füllkrug, who is 33, last represented the DFB on June 8, 2025, accumulating 24 international appearances and 14 goals before his omission following difficult stints at West Ham and AC Milan.

Speaking on DAZN, national team coach Jürgen Klopp addressed the rising speculation surrounding a potential recall for the veteran forward. While acknowledging Füllkrug’s scoring run at the club level, Klopp emphasized that age remains a factor in selection decisions, pointing out the forward’s current 33-year milestone while noting that modern players like Lionel Messi have continued competing at major global tournaments into their late thirties. Niclas Füllkrug schießt in der Bundesliga ein Tor nach dem anderen – aber er ist 33. Das ist nicht meine Schuld, said Klopp, adding that while the present and medium-term future can work, long-term options must be evaluated.

Daniel Thioune Evaluates the National Team Discussion

Werder Bremen coach Daniel Thioune backed the national team manager’s measured approach during a press conference ahead of the club’s fixture against FSV Mainz 05. Thioune described Klopp’s assessment as correct and balanced, noting that selection ultimately hinges on how the national setup intends to play and which players fit the tactical DNA of the squad.

Thioune stated that Füllkrug currently ranks among the finest German strikers and dismissed concerns regarding the player’s age. The Werder manager confirmed that the forward remains entirely prepared to step in if called upon, adding that he would gladly welcome another international opportunity for his talisman regardless of the specific role.

Physical Condition and Public Attention at Werder Bremen

The intense public scrutiny surrounding a potential international recall has created a constant backdrop of headlines for Werder Bremen. Thioune noted that he regularly sits down with the striker to check on his well-being beyond matchday statistics, observing that the veteran forward handles the external hype with remarkable composure and no longer lets himself be rushed or unsettled by public noise.

According to his club coach, Füllkrug currently sits in peak physical condition, describing the forward as perhaps the best version of himself while emphasizing his team-first mentality. Although public speculation continues to build ahead of upcoming international windows, Füllkrug himself has maintained a measured stance, stating that while he remains always ready to serve his country, he refuses to campaign or beg for a spot.

Füllkrug Leads Scoring Charts Ahead of Mainz Match

Füllkrug’s resurgence in Bremen follows a challenging period abroad that saw him drop out of national team consideration after September 2025. His recent club performances include a vital late equalizer during a 2-2 draw away at Borussia Dortmund, where Werder recovered from an early two-goal deficit. The team now prepares for domestic action under Thioune, with the striker sitting at the top of the league’s scoring charts with six goals from six matches ahead of the fixture against FSV Mainz 05.
