Robbie Savage hails Peterborough´s character after snatching last-gasp point

Robbie Savage praised Peterborough’s character as they responded to a late setback to claim a 2-2 draw against Burton in his first home league game as manager.

Posh took an early lead courtesy of Owura Edwards’ second-minute goal, but fell behind after Charlie Webster’s deflected equaliser and substitute Gbemi Arubi’s 89th-minute wonder-strike from the halfway line.

But his side continued to push and substitute Matt Garbett snatched a point deep into stoppage time to maintain Savage’s unbeaten record.

“I thought our team were brilliant in spells, especially in that second half, the way we kept them in, worked at the press,” Savage said.

“This team has been behind this season and people have called them weak, feeble and fragile, but they’ve shown today they’re not, so that’s great character, great desire.

“That’s the emotion at the end. That’s me, it’s not a lack of respect for anybody, it’s just that emotion with our fans, with my players, because they kept going.

“I’ve got to learn to try and stay in my technical area, it’s quite small. It’s a brilliant set-up here, and on my first home game in the league, it’s just my emotion.

“I’m in football for emotion and for moments like that, and I think our fans have seen it, their team, I think that’s what they want.

“Hopefully they’ll come back because they’ve seen a young team who give everything, a manager who gives everything, I’m shattered!

“That drive back home to see my beautiful wife, who wasn’t here today, would have been a long drive.

“Now I can enjoy a lovely night, even though we’ve not won the game, which I’m disappointed about, but you can’t question the attitude, the application, the desire of this team.”

As for Burton boss Gary Bowyer, he was encouraged by his side’s performance but disappointed with his defence for not seeing out the victory.

It ends a run of back-to-back league defeats and sees the Brewers climb to 10th in the table.

Bowyer said: “I thought we played very well, we were brave and the courage that we spoke about on Thursday was evident, and we got through them several times.

“It’s just that final third, not making the run or not taking the shot or the decision-making, but in terms of how we played and played through them, it was good. But, as we know, games are all about goals.

“In the last minute, minute and a half, we go through, and if we score it wraps the game up. The goalie makes a good save, but we still retrieve the ball and then we’ve just got to go and keep the ball in the corner, and we don’t do that.

“The manner of the goal, in terms of the marking in the box, the marking out wide, just nowhere near the standard that you expect from people to be able to defend.”
