Judoka Ariadna Yarey Chávez Medina and swimmer Daniel Saborio Grillo will carry the Mexican flag at the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The selection places two standout youth competitors at the front of the national delegation for the continental event in Senegal.
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games run from October 31 to November 13, according to reports from COM Informa. The upcoming competition marks the first time an Olympic event takes place on the African continent, providing a historic stage for youth athletes from across Mexico.
Representing the state of Quintana Roo, Ariadna Yarey Chávez Medina competes in the -78 kg judo division. Her selection as flag bearer follows an international and domestic build-up through the 2025 and 2026 sports calendar.
Chávez captured the gold medal at the 2025 National Olympiad and earned the silver medal in 2026. Her international record includes two silver medals won in 2026 at the Cadet and Junior Pan American Cups held in Lima, Peru. She also finished fifth in the individual Cadet Pan American Championship and seventh at the 2026 Cadet World Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
As of October 6, 2026, Chávez holds the eighth position in the cadet world ranking published by the International Judo Federation, having accumulated 471 points.
Daniel Saborio Grillo represents the state of Nuevo León and will lead the delegation inside the pool across multiple freestyle events, specifically the 200m, 400m, and 800m distances.
At the Mexican Short Course Swimming Open in December 2025, he claimed the silver medal in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:51.08, earned bronze in the 200m freestyle at 1:48.15, took silver in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay, and won gold in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. He followed those results by finishing first in the 800m freestyle at the national selection trials in April 2026 with a time of 8:02.00.
His competitive experience extends across several major youth championships. Saborio competed at the 2025 World Junior Swimming Championships in Romania in the 4x100m freestyle and medley relays, and swam at the 2026 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Canada. He also won a gold medal with the Mexican 4x200m freestyle relay team, clocking 7:15.60 at the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in the Dominican Republic.
The choice of Chávez and Saborio highlights two distinct disciplines where Mexican competitors have secured ranking points and podium finishes ahead of the opening ceremony in Dakar.
With the competition window opening on October 31, 2026, the athletes and remaining delegation members complete their final training blocks before traveling to Senegal for the two-week youth sports gathering.
