Ghana’s Mixed Martial Arts makes global inroads as Jeff Taylor wins African vice-presidency

Ghana’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) federation has strengthened its international presence following a two-medal haul at the African Championships in Abidjan, in Ivory Coast and the election of Jeff Taylor as vice-president of the continental governing body.

Ghana won gold through Gabriel “Gabby” Fenuku and bronze through Janet Acquah at the October 12–15 competition, where the five-member team competed despite receiving no financial support from government.

Taylor’s election under the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) Africa marks another milestone for Ghana, which is seeking greater influence in the sport’s development across the continent.

“It is an attractive sport, not dangerous, and can rake in money for the fighters. We need more fighters to come on board,” Taylor said at a press conference at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) headquarters in Accra.

He invited boxers, judokas, kickboxers and practitioners of other combat disciplines to embrace MMA, which combines different fighting styles and offers growing commercial opportunities for athletes.

Taylor identified inadequate facilities, funding and logistics as major challenges, calling for a dedicated training centre at the Accra  Sports Stadium to improve preparation and motivate fighters.

He also appealed to the media, corporate institutions and government to support the association’s ambitions, expressing hope that Ghana would eventually produce athletes capable of competing at the highest international level.

The immediate target is the MMA World Championships in Türkiye in December, with Taylor hoping Ghana will secure the resources needed to participate.

Ghana’s latest success builds on Daniel Wadieh’s gold medal in the lightweight division at the African Championships in Luanda, Angola, in April 2026.

With growing international exposure, emerging talent and new leadership responsibilities, the association believes stronger investment can help establish MMA as a commercially viable sport in Ghana. Taylor also hopes the discipline will eventually gain Olympic recognition.
