Nigeria’s Flamingos delivered a clinical performance to defeat Puerto Rico 2-0 in their Group B clash at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, securing a vital first win and keeping their knockout-stage ambitions firmly alive.

Goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi in the 25th minute and substitute Precious Oscar deep in stoppage time (90+3') sealed the victory at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.

The result followed an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland and lifted Nigeria to three points from two matches, level with Poland but behind already-qualified defending champions DPR Korea.

The Flamingos started brightly, pressing high and using their pace to pin Puerto Rico deep. Adegbuyi, named Player of the Match, finished a well-worked move involving Queen Joseph to open the scoring. Nigeria controlled possession and created further chances, though Puerto Rico goalkeeper made several saves.

Coach Akeem Busari’s side managed the game effectively after the break before Oscar rose to head home a late cross from Adegbuyi, sparking celebrations among the Nigerian contingent.

This win marks another strong showing from one of Africa’s most consistent teams in girls’ football and women’s youth soccer. The Flamingos have a proud history at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

They finished third in 2022 in India—their best result—after dramatic penalty shootout victories, reached the quarter-finals in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2024, and advanced from the group stage on multiple other occasions.

Nigeria has qualified for nearly every edition of the tournament since its inception, establishing itself as a powerhouse of African women’s football and a regular producer of talent for the senior Super Falcons.

Attention now turns to Friday’s decisive Group B finale against two-time defending champions DPR Korea. A positive result would virtually guarantee Nigeria’s place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026.

Qualification would extend the Flamingos’ impressive knockout pedigree and keep alive hopes of another deep run, potentially matching or surpassing their 2022 bronze-medal campaign.

Progression carries significant implications for Nigerian women’s football. Success at this level boosts the national pipeline of young female talent, raises the profile of girls’ soccer across Africa, and provides invaluable experience ahead of future senior competitions.

For Puerto Rico, making their FIFA World Cup debut at any level, the tournament remains a valuable learning experience despite two heavy defeats.

As the Flamingos prepare for the challenge of Korea DPR, Nigerian fans will be watching closely. Another strong performance would underline the team’s status as a leading force in global women’s youth football and keep the dream of further glory at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup very much alive.
