Manchester United manager Michael Carrick acknowledged his uncertain future at Old Trafford, stating that he cannot predict what lies ahead as his side prepares to face Roma in the Champions League, MARCA reported.
The English club sits near the Premier League relegation zone following its worst run of results since the 1980s. United has not secured a victory since defeating Azerbaijani side Sabah in September. Despite the mounting pressure and a sequence of poor performances, club leadership has not dismissed Carrick ahead of the European fixture.
“My future? I can’t see the future… you never know what is going to happen,” Carrick said during Tuesday’s pre-match press conference. “I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game. You might think I’m crazy with the results we’ve had… but whatever happens next, will happen, whichever direction it takes.”
Carrick shifted his focus toward raising morale within his squad rather than dwelling on his job security. The team faces a demanding stretch that includes the upcoming European tie followed by domestic league fixtures against Aston Villa and Liverpool.
When questioned about player discipline, including the red card shown to defender Lisandro Martínez during the weekend defeat against Chelsea, Carrick defended the squad’s commitment.
“I know the players and I know what they are capable of,” Carrick stated. “We’ve shown it at times and we saw it a bit the other day. We have to act and make a difference quickly. Two big games this week, it’s another great opportunity to go out and attack and make this a great night for us.”
“I’ve said it before, I don’t doubt the players’ commitment at all,” the manager said. “We can make better decisions, but a lack of commitment does not exist at all.”
