Black Queens

Ghana’s Black Queens, captain Portia Boakye and goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan have received nominations for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Awards.

The Black Queens have been shortlisted for the Women’s Team of the Year award, while Boakye is in contention for the Women’s Player of the Year honour. Konlan has also been nominated for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

The nominations follow Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where the Black Queens reached the quarter-finals.

Black Queens face nine-nation competition

Ghana will compete for the Women’s Team of the Year award against nine other national teams.

The shortlist includes African champions Cameroon, Malawi, Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, Algeria, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire and Mali.

Cameroon earned recognition following their triumph at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where the Indomitable Lionesses were crowned African champions.

Boakye nominated for Player of the Year

Black Queens captain Portia Boakye has been shortlisted for the Women’s Player of the Year award following her contribution to Ghana’s WAFCON campaign.

She featured in five matches and provided one assist as Ghana reached the quarter-finals.

Boakye faces competition from Zambia’s Barbra Banda, South Africa’s Thembi Kgatlana, and Cameroonian duo Marie Ngah Manga and Monique Ngock.

Other nominees are Morocco’s Hanane Ait El Haj, Algeria’s Marine Dafeur, and Malawi’s Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga.

Konlan shortlisted for Goalkeeper of the Year

Goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan has also earned a nomination for the Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award.

She made four appearances for Ghana at the WAFCON tournament, recording one clean sheet and conceding four goals.

Konlan will compete against Nigeria’s Christiana Uzoma, Cameroon’s Michaely Bihina, Algeria’s Chloe N’Gazi and Tanzania’s Mercy Sikelo.

The other nominees are Mali’s Fatoumata Karantao, Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi, Senegal’s Adji Ndiaye, South Africa’s Kaylin Swart and Zambia’s Hazel Nali.

Nigeria’s three-time winner Chiamaka Nnadozie is absent from this year’s shortlist and will not have the opportunity to defend her individual recognition.

The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 7, in Lagos, Nigeria. It will recognise outstanding performances across African football during the eligibility period.
