David Ospina has ended his 20-year professional career at age 38, following a persistent elbow

David Ospina has ended his 20-year professional career at age 38, following a persistent elbow injury that led Atlante to terminate his contract early on August 14, 2026. El Colombiano reported that the goalkeeper announced his retirement during the premiere of a Teleantioquia documentary at the Museum of Modern Art in Medellín.

An Exit Forced by Physical Limits in Medellín

The retirement announcement came during a quiet moment at the museum gala, attended by prominent Colombian football figures including James Rodríguez, Juan Fernando Quintero, Juan Pablo Ángel, René Higuita, Mateus Uribe, and Mauricio Molina. Ospina revealed that his body could no longer sustain professional play after a flare-up of the elbow injury he first suffered in 2022 while playing for Al-Nassr, which required surgery in Spain in 2023.

No me voy porque quiera, sino porque escucho a mi cuerpo, que me habla, Ospina said in a farewell video shown to the attendees. Es mi despedida como futbolista profesional. Ha sido un hermoso viaje. Tú tranquilo.

Minuto60 noted that the veteran goalkeeper’s career began as a teenager in 2005 with Atlético Nacional, where he quickly claimed domestic league titles before moving to Europe to play for Nice, Arsenal, and Napoli.

Ospina Ends Career After Stints in Colombia and Mexico

Ospina’s final official club match took place on May 23, 2026, when Atlético Nacional faced Deportes Tolima in the Apertura semifinals at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot. Following that match, he joined the Colombia national team for the North American World Cup, though he did not make an appearance during the tournament due to physical limitations.

After the World Cup, Ospina joined Atlante in Mexico on a contract running through June 2027. However, physical discomfort from a training ground fall prevented him from making a formal debut for the club. He traveled to Spain for further medical evaluations at the clinic where he previously underwent surgery, after which club football took a secondary role.

Throughout his career, Ospina recorded 475 professional club appearances. His most extensive tenure came with French club Nice, where he played 199 matches. During his stint with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, he conceded just 21 goals before arm injuries limited his playing time.

Legacy with the Colombia National Team

On the international stage, Ospina earned 131 caps for the senior Colombia national team, tying James Rodríguez for the most appearances in the history of the national squad. La FM highlighted his role in three World Cup campaigns—Brazil 2014, Russia 2018, and North America 2026—cementing his status as a central figure in the generation of Colombian football.

Ospina Announces Retirement Alongside Family at Gala

Eighty-one days after Atlante ended the agreement signed through June 2027, Ospina announced his retirement at the conclusion of the first-chapter screening gala held on Wednesday night at the Medellín Museum of Modern Art, alongside his wife Jessica Sterling. With his father Hernán having passed away, Ospina received touching words from his children Dulce María and Maximiliano. Ospina also thanked his mother Lucía, his late father Hernán, and his sister Daniela, noting that they formed his first fan base and played the match of life together. He expressed gratitude to his wife Jessie for sustaining him through difficult times and sharing every victory, and to his children as his greatest triumph, while reflecting on a career that spanned from Atlético Nacional to Arsenal, Napoli, Nice, and Al-Nassr.
