Manchester United have made contact with former France manager Didier Deschamps in case they sack Michael Carrick, according to reports. United are scouring the market for coaches who could step in if Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada come to the decision to axe the current head coach. The midweek Champions League win over Roma, a 3-2 victory after being 2-0 down at Old Trafford, has bought Carrick some much-needed favour with the fans. But if the Red Devils revert to the performance levels of their nine-match winless streak before beating Roma, the board could be forced to act after this weekend.
Carrick appeared on the brink of losing his job after humiliating back-to-back defeats to Como and Bournemouth. He has since overseen a loss at Chelsea and the win over Roma. But the 45-year-old will now hope the comeback victory against the Italians can spearhead a reinvigorated run of form.
United's decision-makers INEOS have nonetheless been preparing behind the scenes in case they have to sack the legendary former midfielder during the upcoming November international break.
And Foot Mercato say they recently sounded out Deschamps, who has not managed at club level since leaving Marseille in 2012. However, he is said to have little to no interest in taking the role at Old Trafford.
The 58-year-old spent 14 years in charge of the France national team and won the 2018 World Cup after finishing as a runner-up at Euro 2016. Deschamps also won the Nations League with Les Bleus in 2021.
But the Frenchman's international contract was not renewed after the recent World Cup, in which his team lost in the semi-finals to Spain. They then lost the third-placed play-off 6-4 to England.
Deschamps, who has also been linked with the Juventus job, has been a free agent ever since but the report states he is not particularly keen to replace Carrick.
Foot Mercato add that United have informally reached out to other managers, including Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery, who is instead set to sign a new long-term contract with Aston Villa.
Deschamps is open to offers but in no rush to decide his next role. It is added that he is prepared to wait until next summer before returning to the dugout, having been a contender for Real Madrid before Jose Mourinho returned to the Bernabeu.
Carrick, meanwhile, will be desperately hoping to prove United have turned a corner by masterminding a home win over Emery's Villa this Sunday.
The Red Devils have only won one of their nine Premier League matches so far this term which leaves them 17th in the table and just two points adrift of 20th-placed Sunderland.
After beating Roma on Tuesday night, Carrick warned: "I'm not getting too carried away with things. I think it's an important night. But we've got to take stock, we've got to stay calm and prepare and be ready for another big game on the weekend."
