Liverpool head into Sunday’s Premier League trip to Leicester City with just one absentee.
It’s an impressive situation at this stage of the season, and Arne Slot’s ability to select most of his first-choice XI this campaign has been a huge factor in the Reds establishing a monumental lead at the top of the table.
Liverpool holds a 13-point advantage over Arsenal with just six games left. Should that stretch to 16 this weekend, the Reds will be confirmed as champions. Arsenal faces Ipswich Town on Easter Sunday, just over two hours before Liverpool’s kicks off at the King Power. By that stage, it will know whether a win will guarantee the title.
Either way, the Reds’ status as champions will be rubber stamped soon. If not this weekend, at home to Tottenham Hotspur the following Sunday seems a real possibility.
Slot insisted in Friday’s pre-match press conference that he’s not yet begun thinking about the title, but even he admitted some may find that hard to believe. He also provided an injury update on Trent Alexander-Arnold after the right-back was spotted in training this week for the first time since he suffered an ankle injury in Liverpool’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on 11 March.
“Trent is coming back from an injury, he trained with us yesterday, and every time he plays with us and trains with us, he shows his commitment,” said Slot, in reference to the ongoing contract uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold.
“[He is] not [ready] to start but if things go well today and tomorrow, he might be on the bench. But definitely not to start because he is out for five and a half weeks and this is, today, probably his first session with the team.
“It was Wednesday, I think, he did parts of the team session. So he’s not able to start but hopefully he can be able to join us because for Conor [Bradley], he has been out for a long time, so for him to play 90 isn’t easy as well.”
Bradley is among those who have recently returned from injury, along with Alisson, and both started in last week’s win over West Ham United. The former managed 68 minutes in his first start in over two months. Darwin Nunez should also return at Leicester after missing last time out due to illness.
In fact, the only player ruled out for certain is Joe Gomez. The defender hasn’t played since February when he was replaced against Plymouth Argyle with a hamstring injury that subsequently required surgery. Gomez has been working to regain his fitness for several weeks and is expected to play some part before the end of the season, but isn’t available to face Leicester on Sunday.
