RC Lens Bans Away Fans for Northern Derby Against Lille Following Crowd Trouble

RC Lens has banned its supporters from attending Friday’s Ligue 1 away match against Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, following a series of flare incidents and crowd disturbances during recent European and domestic fixtures.

The decision prevents any visiting fans from occupying the away section for the Northern Derby, scheduled for a 21.05 CEST kickoff. Club leadership acted after European and league interruptions involving pyrotechnics, aiming to avoid sanctions for the club.

Pyrotechnics Disrupt Matches in Bruges and Troyes

The travel ban follows escalating crowd disturbances during recent away fixtures. On Wednesday, during the Champions League encounter against Club Brugge at the Jan Breydelstadion, visiting supporters ignited smoke bombs and threw them onto the playing surface. The match was temporarily halted as a result.

The incident in Belgium mirrored a similar occurrence on October 17 in Troyes, where dozens of smoke bombs were lit, forcing another temporary stoppage. The Lens hierarchy determined that a hard measure was required after repeated disruptions.

Police Intervene After Tensions in Ieper

While crowd trouble surfaced inside the stadium during the 3-0 defeat to Club Brugge, local law enforcement had already intercepted potential mass disorder a day earlier. Belgian police responded to intelligence regarding groups gathering in the city of Ieper ahead of the match.

Local police units recorded between 70 and 100 Lens supporters gathered near the Grote Markt, many dressed in black and wearing balaclavas. Authorities noted the presence of a second group, identified as supporters of KAA Gent, who had reportedly coordinated with French counterparts to confront fans of Club Brugge and Lille OSC, given the good ties between Bruges and Lille supporters.

Fearing large-scale clashes, the local police zone scaled up its deployment, checked identification documents and vehicle registration plates, and requested a water cannon from Brussels. Ultimately, the confrontation was averted. “It has been tense for an hour, but it did not come to a confrontation. The Club Brugge supporters did not show up. The situation was already neutralized before the water cannon was in Ieper,” Glenn Verdru of the local police told Focus WTV.

Flares Cause Injuries at Jan Breydelstadion

Despite the preventive measures outside the city, security inside the Jan Breydelstadion failed to contain the visiting section. During the first half, supporters from the away end hurled flares and Bengal lights toward the home supporters, with one projectile landing in a seating area designated for disabled spectators.

The pyrotechnics caused minor injuries to a stadium steward, who received on-site medical treatment for light burns. Local police confirmed that an official record has been compiled and investigators are reviewing stadium camera footage to identify individuals responsible for launching the fireworks, according to spokesperson Lien Depoorter.

Disciplinary bodies are expected to review the pyrotechnic incidents. It is reported that UEFA may examine the crowd disturbances during the Champions League fixture, which could result in disciplinary measures for RC Lens.

RC Lens Closes Away Allocation for Lille Derby

With the club facing pressure over fan conduct, RC Lens management organized consultations with various supporters’ associations on Tuesday. The directive to close the away allocation for the derby at Lille was finalized to prevent further sanctions.

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy will host the Ligue 1 encounter without any travelling representation from Lens, shifting the immediate focus toward club security measures and upcoming disciplinary rulings from football authorities regarding the events in Belgium and France.
