Kevin Keegan's iconic Hamburg shirt from 1977 Super Cup against Liverpool sells for £84,500 at auction

Kevin Keegan's iconic 1977 European Super Cup shirt has been sold at auction for a jaw-dropping £84,500.

The 1977 European Super Cup was contested between Liverpool, Keegan's former side, and his new club Hamburg. Despite drawing 1-1 in the first leg, Hamburg lost 6-0 in Keegan's first return to Anfield since his signing.

The much-loved legend's No7 shirt formed part of his former Liverpool team-mate Emlyn Hughes' collection. Hughes, who died in 2004, got it in a swap, and it was estimated at around £2,000 to £3,000 by BUDDS auctioneers.

The sky-blue and white adidas shirt features a v-neck style collar and embroidered badge.

The sale comes just months after the football world was plunged into mourning over the death of Keegan, who was regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation.

Keegan began his playing career at Scunthorpe United in 1968, before Bill Shankly signed him for Liverpool. There, he won seven major trophies including three league titles and one European Cup during a six-year spell.

Ever ambitious, Keegan signed for Hamburg in 1977, and it was during his three-year spell in Germany that the 5ft 7in Englishman earned the nickname the 'Mighty Mouse', winning the league title in 1979 and reaching the 1980 European Cup final, where his side were beaten by Nottingham Forest.

It was also at Hamburg that he confirmed his world-class credentials, winning the Ballon d'Or in 1978 and 1979.

The following year he surprisingly joined Southampton before finishing his playing career with Newcastle, where his love affair with the Geordie fans was born during their 1984 promotion-winning campaign.

Keegan made 63 England appearances and captained his country over 30 times, although his only World Cup was an injury-scarred appearance in 1982.

In 1992, Keegan made his first step into management at his former club Newcastle, guiding them into the Premier League and to within touching distance of the 1995-96 title only to miss out to Manchester United.

After leaving St James' Park in January 1997, a brief stint at Fulham followed before he became England manager in 1999, having initially taken on the job following Glenn Hoddle's departure.

Having overseen a disappointing Euro 2000 campaign, Keegan resigned on the back of defeat by Germany at Wembley Stadium, the last match at the national stadium before it was rebuilt.

After England, he managed Manchester City for four years before returning for a brief spell at Newcastle.

Following his death, an extraordinary sea of flowers surrounded St James' Park to pay tribute to 'The Messiah'.

The club wrote a moving statement at the time, which read: 'We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club's history.

'Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters.'
