CBS’s relationship with Tony Romo deteriorated in a hurry this offseason.

Romo signed with the network after his retirement and became an integral part of their broadcasting crew eventually signed a 10-year deal worth $180 million in 2020. But after the OWI case against him in Wisconsin, the network initially suspended him before severing ties.

Since then, there hasn’t been a clear word on what comes next for the former Dallas Cowboys star, but one media analyst believes he knows a potential avenue that could serve as Romo’s comeback.

Media Analyst Reveals Potential Comeback Scenario for Tony Romo

An OWI case against Romo led to his license being revoked for six months, fines that amounted to less than $1,000, and a mandatory AAP. But even with no jail or probation time, CBS chose to cut ties with him, though they were still on the hook for a large chunk of the $72 million remaining on his deal.

CBS elevated three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt to the booth alongside Jim Nantz. However, Jimmy Traina believes Romo’s career isn’t six feet under just yet.

On the latest episode of the “Traina Thoughts” podcast, the veteran media presence made his prediction for where he could see the former Cowboys star end up.

“This would all just be speculation,” Traina wondered. “I’m not sure what kind of fit Tony Romo and Joe Davis would be, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if FOX brought in Romo to replace Greg Olsen on their No. 2 crew. I guess they could elevate.

“If Olsen left for Monday Night Football, I don’t think Troy Aikman’s taking the No. 2 job at FOX, so we would leave that aside. I don’t know if Travis Kelce would be the No. 2 broadcaster at FOX. Seems like not high-profile enough. There’s the Sean McVay thing.”

This brought Traina to the ultimate problem that FOX is facing in the near future. Due to the presence of a seven-time Super Bowl champion whom they signed to a 10-year contract worth $375 million, anyone else coming in would be stuck playing second fiddle.

“I think Romo being the No. 2 on FOX would be a good comeback gig for Romo. He’s obviously not going to get the money from FOX that he got from CBS, where he was No. 1, but it’s not completely out of the question, I would say.”

Olsen made a name for himself in the role, even earning a Sports Emmy nomination, and there were more than a few questions when he was demoted for Brady.
